you can wear your standard t-shirt of the day UNDER the collared shirt. you may then take off the said collared shirt once the photo is taken. well….let me just say that one year, that collared shirt came off BEFORE the picture…only to reveal the beloved wife-beater shirt beneath.
as much as i was horrified…it’s the picture that everyone remembers! teachers still talk about it.
for my own picture days, in 2nd grade my mother set my hair and put me in my best (at the time) dress. (it was an argument that she clearly won.) that photo looks NOTHING like i did at the time. my mom and i, to this day, still laugh about how ridiculous i look.
I don’t know that I can do it; but Meredith you have given me food for thought. I may give them a “Big Love” choice. I will say that my mother made me dress in colors that matched our home decor (I don’t go that far) and to this day we laugh about those pictures that of course are not timeless. I’m proud of you Meredith. Say “Cheese!”
It was such a relief not to have the yearly clashing of heads over my choice of shirt. I only give these over-priced pics to family anyway, who will actually think it’s adorable that they wore what they wanted.
No battle of the wills at our house–the boys pick what they want to wear (if they think about it at all…). The comfy, ragged sports t-shirt is part of the memory for the year….
Last year the cute gingham shirts were stuffed in the backpacks when they came home. We had no idea if they made it into the photos or not. Neither boy could remember what they wore at the time the flashbulb went off. We were on pins and needles until the proofs came back. To my relief, the mom-picked shirts made it. Our school does the group class picture on a different day so I let the boys pick on that day and I get to pick the headshot wear. Last year my brother and I unbeknownst put all our kids in green and it looks great at my parents house hanging together. I was considering calling him this year, but now you give me pause. Still have a few weeks to figure it out…
picture day is a deal-making day in our house.

I highly recommend giving up the fight.
peer pressure. sixth grader did it on his own. Having other people’s parents who care works by the transitive property
