Making homework a bit more playful…and hilarious.

I came across this video today as I was deleting the garbage off of my Flip camera. And it made me almost wet myself…again.

Ya see a few weeks ago my 8 year old decided to make a silly little paper bag puppet while he was waiting for his big bro. to finish up his middle school homework. I’m all for creative play and while he was crafting this adorable puppet he called “Bobby”, I remember thinking,
“Aw… look how creative he is, maybe his brain hasn’t been sucked out afterall by the jumbotron of a screen in our basement in front of which he would spend 23 hours a day if I let him”.

The he started to make the puppet talk. And talk and talk and talk and talk.
And then tell jokes. All in the most brilliantly annoying tone and accent I had ever heard a puppet put forth.

Needless to say twenty minutes in I was ready to blow Bobby up and pop his brains out. But I didn’t.

Instead I somehow managed to suck it up and play along, telling Truman that he could keep Bobby if Bobby did his spelling words for him (something I had been nagging Tru to sit down and do for too many days).

This was the result.

Once again, just like in the case of the Nerf gun battles in the basement, the watching of Harry Potter for the 29th time, and the occasional burping contest, the lesson remains.

If you can’t beat em, jump in with two feet.

PS: The video jumps a bit at the beginning…Tru actually did not spell “were” with a double “e” at the end.

Anybody else have a way to make homework a little less horrible??

  1. That was very cute and entertaining. Must try with my little boy when he hits that age =) Imen x

  2. Too funny–I think I’m going to suggest a puppet to my clowns. do you think the puppets can figure out fractions??? Because this mama really sucks at math!

So funny! You’re a great mom to overcome your annoyance and encourage him in this!

It is quite amazing what happens when your kid takes on an alter-ego in the form of a puppet. I have been able to get Bobby to do things Mr. Truman regularly balks at.

Let’s just say Bobby is really good at unloading the silverware from the dishwasher.
I’m fully aware that this is either a really superb parenting technique on my part, or a set-up for some serious time on a shrink’s couch when Tru is 35.

No need for the couch. I remember quite well your imaginary friends. I got a lot of mileage out of those invisible people!!! Your brothers little friend JICKY, don’t know how that came to be, was especially useful when it came time to get things done!
When i spoke to Tru he was quite all right with me inquiring about my third grandson Bobby.
